What Am I?

Sometime ago I assisted a client giving a key note, she wanted audience participation and needed someone to write on flip charts, so that she could focus.  If you’ve read my earlier posts you’ll know this isn’t my idea of a picnic in the park, but I went along with her.

She wanted to introduce me and as she said ‘shamelessly plug your business’ but she really wasn’t sure what she ought to call me.  Her thought was that assistant was a demeaning sort of title, suggesting that I ranked lower than she.  My response was that it truly depends on how you define the assistant.  Certainly the old days of taking dictation, doing the filing and making the coffee, the assistant would have been considered to rank lower than the boss, and certainly in a hierarchical type organisation, everyone ranks below someone, except the shareholders.

However, I run my own business, I am my own boss and I don’t have anyone over me.  I work with my clients, not for them, and as long as they pay me in a timely manner, I am happy to continue to work with them.  I assist them, in my view, with tasks that they can’t do for themselves either because they don’t have the time or the knowledge.  I free them up to focus on their strengths, while I service their requirements from my pool of knowledge and skills.

So I am happy to be an Assistant, to assist my clients with the skills that I have learned and consequently I market myself as a Virtual Assistant, due to the off site office situation.
